Bluebell Railway & Wakehurst Place for Two

Go full steam ahead for a day out discovering the East and West Sussex borders courtesy of the Bluebell Steam Railway! Armed with your rover ticket you’ll be able to travel along this heritage railway line all day long – but make sure you leave time for the extra sightseeing visit this package includes’ฆ As well as your unlimited travel on the Bluebell railway line between East Grinstead and Sheffield Park for two this wonderful package also includes a pair of entry tickets to the much-loved Wakehurst Place. Managed by Kew Gardens and owned by the National Trust this is one of the most visited estates in their vast collection and it’s easy to see why. Dominated by a 16th century mansion house Wakehurst’s estate covers over 500 acres and includes formal walled and water gardens as well as wooded areas with many planted trees and swathes of that classic rolling English countryside too. It is also home to the renowned Millenium Seed Bank project. It’s really a very lovely place to while away a few hours and it’s just10 minutes drive from the Bluebell’s East Grinstead train terminus. And yes you might not know it but this standard gauge preserved railway does indeed connect up to the mainline national rail network. At East Grinstead station the lovely restored steam and diesel trains pull in onto platform 3 and right alongside their modern day counterparts that use the two mainline station platforms on the direct line between London and the Sussex coast. It’s a fascinating mix of modern and bygone age with the Bluebell line! The railway currently takes you on an 11 mile run from East Grinstead heading south to Sheffield Park. On the way you’ll pass intermediate stations Horsted Keynes and Kingscote both of which offer authentic Victorian stations. It’s a real delight to explore and with a collection of over 30 steam locos and over 150 carriages and wagons there’s plenty to look at! If whilst you’re riding the line you feel a certain sense of deja vu then you might well have seen parts of the very scenic Bluebell Steam Railway on the big or small screen. It has featured in films like ‘A Room with A View’ and ‘102 Dalmatians’ to TV series such as ‘Endeavour’ and of course an Agatha Christie mystery. All in all we think this day out on the Bluebell and at Wakehurst place is a superb way to spend a day in Sussex.
