Learn to Jetsurf

If you’™re looking to get into the next cutting edge water sport it’™s about time you learnt to jetsurf! Put simply this is a motorised surfboard and it is brilliant fun. And being a self-powered surfboard means you don’™t need any waves to ride one of these beasts.Just the idea of a jet surfboard sounds like something Marty McFly would cruise around on in the make-believe world of the movies. But it’™s time to believe as this jetsurf experience is now very much a reality and coming to an in-land lake near you!The operators of these jetsurfing experiences are currently the UK’™s only importer of these crazy waterborne machines. They’™re made out of carbon fibre and look like a wakeboard but they are directional. They are also slightly thicker in the middle as this is where the two-stroke power unit is housed. So yes on a jet board you have the power right between your feet. And just like wakeboarding or surfing the key to the whole thing is getting your balance so you can stand on the jetsurf. You go barefoot for jetsurfing with your feet held onto the board in the snowboard-style bindings. You’™ll need to decide whether you’™re a ‘˜regular’™ or ‘˜goofy’™ jetsurfer ie left foot forward or right foot forward but the jetsurf coaching team will help you with this. All sessions start with an on-shore safety briefing where the controls will be shown to you (there’™s a hand-held throttle) and the basics of stance and carving will be explained also. Then it’™s out to the water where when you’™re waist height in the teaching will begin proper. And as we said the first major task is getting on the board. This can take a wee while to crack especially if you’™ve never done any board sports before let alone tried handling a jet powered surfboard. Once you’™re up it’™s time to (gently) open up the throttle and get the board moving. Of course there are no brakes so stopping is just a case of lifting off the throttle and letting the drag of the water slow you down until you plop back into the water which can be a smooth gliding manoeuvre or more of a bellyflop affair – but it’™s all part of the fun of a motorised surfboard. For those who just want a taster of this new jet boarding lark will cover these basics in the introductory taster lesson which once completed allows you to hire jetsurfs in the future and ride them. If you really want to grips with the sport go for the five-hour package. You can spread the five-hour session over three or four days with a mix of coached and free riding jetsurf sessions so you can get to the point of hopefully perfecting your front and heel edge carves out on the freshwater lake to ride like a pro!
